EARTH’S DAY CELEBRATIONS

Today is 22nd April and it is not definitely Thursday but today is World Earth Day. Our school had organized a programme to celebrate it. The presence of Dr. Farida Tampal, State Director of A P World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), Mr.Srinivas, Manager, Corporate officer for A P WWF, Mr.M.Vedakumar, Chairman of Oxford Grammar School, Mrs. Sai Leela Reddy, Head Mistress of Oxford Grammar School as dignitary members added essence to the programme. The dignitary members were welcomed by a welcome song. Then a short power point presentation on Climate Change was presented by Praneetha, a student of Oxford Grammar School. It was followed by a speech by veena.

Dr. Farida Tampal addressed the gathering and she elaborately explained Climate Change and its effects and advised the students to be a part of its saviors. She conducted a small game for the children and they enjoyed a lot. Then our Chairman Mr.M.Vedakumar said that the students of Oxford Grammar School facilitated to the programs related to Environment. Particularly the awareness programs of Climate Change to make them aware and responsible for the effects of Climate Change. Then the Compost Pit was inaugurated in the school premises which is being maintained by the school children.

NATIONAL HERITAGE AWARDS TO HYDERABAD SCHOOLS

Indian National Trust For Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), New Delhi which has been striving to promote heritage among the school children and teachers at National Level, has initiated heritage education Nation wide. Heritage Educational Publications, documentaries and films are being prepared apart from conducting various workshops, heritage walks, exhibitions, essay writing and elocutions competitions to involve the students and teachers practically for greater impact on heritage at School and college level all over India. The stress is on tangible and intangible heritage. As part of it National Level Competitions are held through the projects prepared by the respective schools of various states, which will be sent to the Head Quarters (New Delhi) to scrutinize for selection of National Awards.

In this context, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan Public School, Jubilee Hills has been adjudged as 1st Runner Up alongwith Sri Shankara Vidyashramam, Chennai, this Award is shared among these schools.

Similarly, Oxford Grammar School, Himayatnagar has been adjudged for 2nd Runner Up Award out of the best 5 schools selected from all the States which competed National Level. In this connection, it is mentioned that last year Oxford Grammar School has won the lone 1st Prize at National Level and Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan Public School, Jubilee Hills got honoured with consolation prize.

The efforts of INTACH Hyderabad Chapter have resulted in formation of 24 Heritage Clubs at School and college level. These clubs conduct various heritage related activities at regular intervals under the guidance of INTACH Hyderabad Chapter.

Recently, on 18th April, 2010 World Heritage Day was celebrated by INTACH Hyderabad Chapter under the auspicious of Sri.M.Gopala Krishnanan, Convenor INTACH A.P. and Hyderabad Chapter has organized the Heritage Awards Function to commemorate World Heritage Day, where Awards were given to the owners of the well maintained heritage buildings in twin cities from the hands of His Excellency: Sri.Narasimhan, the Governor of Andhra Pradesh. It has been customary over the years. On this occasion the above 2 schools have been given away respective awards by His Excellency.

Report on Inauguration of Oxford Cricket Nets

Dr.Sameer Sharma, IAS., Commissioner, GHMC inaugurated Oxford Cricket Nets on 20th March, 2010 in school playground. Then he batted to the bowling by Mr.Shoab Maqsoosi, Cricketer, Deccan Chargers IPL-2, 2009. The other dignitaries present on the occasion were Mr.M.Vedakumar, Chairman, Oxford Grammar School, Mr.Shoab Maqsoosi, Cricketer, Deccan Chargers IPL-2 and Ranji Player. Mrs.B.Saileela Reddy, Head Mistress and Mr.Ibrahim, the coach.

Dr.Sameer Sharma, IAS., said that the sprawling play ground will help the students to attend various events being provided by the school, which has to be utilized by the students.

Mr.M.Vedakumar, Mr.Shoaib Maqsoosi played in the new cricket pitch, which provided visual tips to our cricket team.

Mr.M.Vedakumar, Chairman, observed that the students are playing better, making use of their spacious play ground, so keeping this in view, he gave the better amenities by providing them with Nets for their better performance in future.

Mr.Shoaib Maqsoosi, on this occasion expressed that Sports should become integral part of school education. It helps in physical fitness and also it inculcates discipline and develops sportsmanship among students.

 
A Report on Educational Trip to Coonoor and Ooty organized by TERI
Date: 3.3.2010 to 5.3.2010
Venue: Salvation Army Guest House
Topic: Environment Conservation

Two students from our school K.Praneetha and P. Samanvith Reddy of 9th class and M.M.K.Suvasini went to Coonoor by Sabari Express on 2nd March 2010 at 12.oo.noon.
They reached the guest house along with TERI organizers by 1.00.P.M.

Day-1: There was a power point presentation given by a research student Mr.Godwin. He was doing research on Nilgiri habitat. A documentary was also shown in which disasters were screened related to different places such as Nalgonda (Severe drought), Lakshadweep (Sea – Horse colour was changed due to climate change), New Delhi
(Effect of Dengue) and Mumbai (Heavy Floods).

Day -2: They have visited shola forest which 1700mts height from sea level and saw a place where westerughats meet Extern Ghats. There was Nature Trekking in Nilgiris
(Kotagiri Forest). The trees are very thick and tall with broad canopy, students enjoyed very much with involvement of conservation of environment. They could also hear the different calls of birds and also saw some birds. There was a big swamp which supplies water to the trees in summer.
After this trekking there was a visit to tribal village called ‘Thoda’ village. Students interacted with the tribal people. Students also have observed different stages of decomposition of wood and lichens on rocks and tree trunks. At night just before dinner they had a discussion session around the ‘Camp Fire’. In which students expressed their views on that days trip and experience. In and around the forest students cleaned the environment by picking up polythene bags throw by tourists and locals.

Day-3: They went to Ooty gardens called Organic Farming in which all the trees and plants nourished by organic manure prepared by the forest authorities. Later They have visited a Tribal museum and Pine Forest. They have also visited tea factory.
Schools from 3 cities like Hyderabad, Chennai, and Bangalore attended this educational trip organized by TERI. They have also visited John Sullivan’s memorial who contributed a lot for the development of Nilgiris and the people over there. He was a collector of Coimbotore during British Rule. He was the discoverer and developer of the Nilgiris. Students would like to share their experience to their fellow students by showing pictures and video graphs

 
REPORT on campaign for a better environment

The following students participated in 3Rs campaign as a part of current campaign for a better Environment in the All India Industrial Exhibition, Nampally organized by Andhra Pradesh Environment connect (APEC) at Oxford Grammar School on 30.1.2010. The competitions are conducted in Mimicry, Dance, Songs, Street Play/Skit and Puppetry to bring awareness in the areas of water conservation, energy conservation, improving green cover, promoting Green Panchayaths and recycling of plastic and paper waste among the students and parents. Oxford Grammar School students participated in the Skit, Songs and Puppetry competitions, and won prizes in three events.

From OGS:

The students of V & VII classes participated in Puppetry. The theme was “Conservation of Environment and Protection of trees” and they won 1st prize.
The students of VI & VII classes participated in skit competition and won IIIrd Prize. The theme was conservation of water and energy and to develop awareness among the citizens of our country about our mother earth.
The students of VI & VII classes participated in singing competition and won the IInd prize.

A report on the Competitions conducted by
TERI (The Energy & Resources Institute)
Oxford Grammar School, a Nodal School of TERI. Among 7 cluster schools of this Nodal school, have taken part in School Level Competitions conducted by TERI an International Organisation based at New Delhi in Debate and Quiz on “Climate Change” on 1st Feb, 2010. From each school 2 students from 7th, 8th class and 9th class have participated in Quiz and Debate competitions respectively

The objective of the competitions is to create awareness among the students regarding climate change happening in our country. The competitions are started at 10.30 a.m on 1st Feb, 2010 at Oxford Grammar School, St.No.12, Himayatnagar. Master Ayush Agarwal and Master Anjal S.Mehker of Goutham Model School and Miss.K.Alekhya and Master. Himanshi from Oxford Grammar School have won the I Place in Quiz competition. Miss.Anjali B.Yellikar and Miss.Shailaja Saraswathi of Vasavi Public School have won the I place and Miss.K.Pranitha and Master P.Samanvith Reddy of Oxford Grammar, Himayatnagar School have won the II Prize in Debate competition. These are the green soldiers to protect the earth from global warming.

The winners will face the 2nd Round Competitions at “City Level Competitions”. The date of the competitions will be announced shortly.

Such competitions will be conducted frequently by TERI. All the clusters schools of our nodal school will have a field trip very soon

Oxford Grammar School celebrated “Awards of Excellence” programme on 7th June 2009 to honour all the 39 meritorious students out of 119, who scored above 500 in aggregate, and two students securing centum in mathematics. Dr.Koya Venkateshwara Rao, M.Sc. Ph.D (Chemistry), Chemistry H.O.D New Science College, the guest, distributing the mementos to the students, expressed that all the students are equally capable and if each and every child works hard, he could definitely achieve the goal, depending on the interest and facilities provided by the parents. Mr.M.Vedakumar, Chairman, Oxford Grammar School, congratulating the students expressed the importance of that education towards intellectual development and individual thinking, to uplift the society. He also appreciated all the teachers for their sincere service and team work.

Mrs. B. Saileela Reddy Head Mistress, presented the report of achievement of good results in S.S.C Public Examination 2009, and thanked all the teachers for their combined efforts and strategical methods, and expressed her happiness for the good performance by the 39 students out of 119, getting above 500 in aggregate. The function came to an end with the vote of thanks.

The following students participated in ‘Children’s day interschool Chess tournament’ organized by ‘Jaya prada chess academy & AWA Sports academy’ under the AEGIS of AP Chess Association, at Anandnagar Community Hall, Khairatabad, on 10th Nov,’09. Our school students participated in 4 categories i.e. all Senior Girls, senior boys, junior boys & junior girls. Our school students won the prizes in different categories out of ‘top ten’. Children received prizes from state school games federation organizer, K.Rami Reddy state AP chess Association General secretary K. Kanna Reddy and organizing secretary J.Subramanyam. Oxford Cricket Club was established 18 years ago. Mr.Syed Ibrahim and Mr.Srinivas coaches of OGS, are successful in accomplishing, under 14 and under 16 teams by rendering intensive Physical and technical training in the spacious school play ground. Every year during summer our school cricket team participates in the tournament conducted by BCCI in Bangalore. Our school teams under 14 & under 16 participated at District and state level conducted under auspicious of HCA and won many tournaments.

Our school cricket team got a rare opportunity to meet the present Indian Cricket Team, on visit to Hyderabad to play 5th One day International Cricket game at Rajiv Gandhi Stadium. Our school team went to meet them at Taj Krishna on 6th Nov, 09 along with their coach Mr.Ibrahim. Members of Oxford Grammar School team felt very happy. It was a great inspiration as well as motivation for our school players.

felicitated Mr. Shoaib Maqsusi

Oxford Grammar School felicitated Mr. Shoaib Maqsusi a team member of Deccan Chargers for the IPL - II. He was an Oxfordian and started his career as Cricketer when he joined the school in 1999. He practiced his cricket in Oxford school play ground under the coach Mr. Ibrahim, father of Shoaib.

The felicitation was held in the school play ground and Shoaib with his father was present. Mr. Vedakumar, the chairman of the school was the chief guest. Shoaib was invited by the staff, students of the school. Students were very happy to see Mr. Shoaib among them. Talking on the occasion Mr. Vedakumar, the chairman of the school expressed his pleasure for Shoaib reaching the great heights. He felt that all the students should take the inspiration of Shoaib for the future achievements. He felt happy that the school ground could produce the best products under the management of Oxford Grammar School. He expressed his hope of many more achievements.

Mrs. Saileela Reddy H.M of the school spoke on the occasion and said that Shoaib as student was very much disciplined and obedient. She felt that the behaviour of a students is basically depends on the brought up of the parents. She appreciated the parents. Later some of the students of the school expressed their happiness for their ex-students achievement in the recent IPL – II.

Shoaib talking on the occasion recollected his student days in the school and the training he had taken when he was in the school. He shared his feelings with the students about his experiences of the matches that he played in South Africa for the IPL – II.

Mr. Vedakumar chairman of the school presented a memento to Mr. Shoaib.

Report on Sports cum Annual Day – 2008-2009

Oxford Grammar School Celebrated it’s 28th Sports-cum-Annual Day Celebrations for two days i.e. on 31st Jan & 1st Feb, 2009 at their school play ground in frolicsome atmosphere. A Festive Spirit was created with a well decorated playground and every little detail seen to. The students gave spectacular performance, which spoke of discipline and sportsmanship.

The dignitaries who were present on the 1st day, were Sri.Susheelkumar IPS, Former Director General of Police of A.P; Co-convenor INTACH Hyderabad Chapter was the chief guest and Sri P.Shankar, Asian Games Silver Medalist in Athletics was the Guest of Honour.

Mr.Susheelkumar, the chief guest of the occasion expressed his appreciation of the immense talents of the students, who performed with great expertise. He extolled the Management’s efforts to Nurture and Nourish the students with value based education for their all round development. Sri.P.Shankar, the Guest of Honour in his speech said he was amazed to watch the programmes performed by the Nursery kids who excel in their performance.

The dignitaries who were present on the 2nd day of the celebration were Dr.P.Padmavathi, Vice Chancellor, Jawaharlal Nehru Architecture and Fine Arts University as the Chief Guest, Sri.L.Venkataramreddy, General Secretary, Andhra Pradesh Olympic Association as the guest of Honour. Dr.P.Padmavathi, while speaking on the occasion said that she was impressed by the spectacular performance and by the highly disciplined and groomed students of Oxford Grammar School.

Sri.L.Venkatramreddy, the Guest of Honour said that he was impressed by the eye-catching performance of the students and staff for their efforts in making the programme a successful.

Mr.M.Vedakumar, Chairman of Oxford Grammar School, while presiding over the function in his concluding speech advised the parents to give freedom to express to their wards and to give best child to the society and to allow lot of place to the child to play, he opined that a child should be respected.

Mrs.B.Saileela Reddy, H.M, a pillar of strength and support to the institution read the Annual Report Mr.M.L.Muralidhar Rao, Correspondent of the school graced the occasion.

The programme kick started with the impressive March past by the Four Houses. Green Champak, Red Roses, Blue Bells, and Sunflower, which displayed order and uniformity. The students brought out the sparkle of the gems in their true colours. The oath was taken by the head girl on behalf of the entire school, then Mr.Susheelkumar, the Chief Guest declared the Sports Meet Open. The athletic events like Flat Race, Musical chair entertained the onlookers.

The celebration continued with grand display of cultural programmes, which reflected variety of folk dances of our country.

It was followed by Aerobic dance brought out the grit and determination of the girls. Next pyramids formation by the high school boys displayed exemplary precision and daredevil techniques.

The programme followed by the prize distribution. The prizes were given to the students for their excellent performance in various events of sports for general proficiency.

The function closed with a Vote of Thanks.


A Report on HIV --- AIDS Week
1st December to 6th December – 2008
HIV --- AIDS Week was observed in our school
Day – 1.Students of 9th class were explained about the growing up changes in adolescence age. They understood the bodily changes between childhood and Adult age in which hormones are involved. The were also explained about the hygiene they maintain to be away from the infections related to Reproductive System.

Day – 2. Students were explained about the structures of HIV, routes of entry of HIV into Human bodies, through 4 ways i.e.
1) Sexual contact 2) infected blood transfusion 3) Mother to Child and 4) infected needles, Syringes and blades.
They were also taught about the ABC formula
A – Abstinence (no sex before marriage)
B – Be faithful to life partner.
C – Concentrate on studies.

They were also explained about the 4 stages from the HIV infection to the AIDS stage.

Stage – 1. HIV Acute infection (Window period) in which HIV Virus is not seen in the tests. During this period human body does not produce antibodies against the virus. So it can not be seen in the blood. It is called window period.

Stage – 2. HIV Asymptomatic period (Incubation period). In this period symptoms will not be much, but HIV positive may suffer from fever and weight loss. During this period HIV damages more no. of Cd4 cells (a type of lymphocytes of WBC) and multiply in number.

Stage – 3. HIV Symptomatic stage. In this stage, due to reduction in no. of lymphocytes the HIV positive suffers from diarrhoea, skin diseases, continuous fever, ulcers in mouth, swellings on the body and loss of appetite.

Stage – 4. AIDS Stage . This is the last stage of HIV infection. The Immune System is damaged very much, so the HIV Positive suffers from diseases like, Tuberculosis, ulcers in mouth, diarrhoea, RTIs (Reproductive Tract Infections) and STDs (Sexually Transmitted infections). The patient also suffers from skin diseases, continuous fever and weight loss. He will be vulnerable to many infectious diseases.

HIV – Human Immuno Deficiency Virus.
AIDS – Aequired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome.

Day – 3. Life Skills. Were explained to students using examples.
1. Critical thinking skill.
2. Decision making skill.
3. Interpersonal skill.
4. Communication skill.
5. Coping skill.
6. Handling peer pressure.
7. Building and Caring relationships
8. Negotiating skill.
9. Skill of Empathy.
10. Self awareness skill.
11. Counseling.

There are 3 tests to find HIV in blood.
1. ELISA – Enzyme linked Immuno Sorbant Assay
2. P.C.R – Polymerase chain Reaction
3. Western Blot Test.

Day – 4. Skits on life skills.
4 – groups of Students performed skits.
Day – 5. QUIZ on Adolescence Education, HIV and AIDS.

Day – 6. Interaction with Students.
A Female doctor Dr. Anitha Reddy from ‘Arya’ Hospital and a Male doctor Prasad, Medical officer from Gov’t Hospital gave their valuable suggestions and clarified students’ doubts.

80% to 90% of HIV infected persons survive for a period of 10 years. 5% - 10% survive only for 3 – 5 years and about 5% of HIV positive live longer without development of AIDS.

HIV lives in human blood, semen, vaginal secretions and breast milk. It can live only for 15 – 30 seconds outside the human body.
In A.P. approximately 91% of HIV infection is due to sexual made of Transmission.

HIV does not spread through sharing the food, kissing on cheeks, hugging, mosquito & other insects bite, sharing toilet seats or caring for some one with HIV --- AIDS.

Children with HIV and AIDS must be allowed to live a normal life. HIV Positive children need a lot of love and care from class mates, friends, family members and society.
HIV also does not spread through urine, faeces, saliva or by vomit

Report on a visit to Medex – 2008
The students of class VIII, IX & X were taken to Medex – 2008 (Medical Exhibition) at Osmania Medical College Koti. The students numbered 105 and they were taken on 25-11-2008. The idea behind this visit was to educate the students about their anotomy and physiology and functioning of various organs. They viewed video clippings on Natural disasters and plastic surgery on aspects like Rhinoplasty (Nose), Fingre replacement, Botox treatment etc. They have watched a movie on “Awarness of Hiv–Aids”. They have seen the demonstrations of first aid to the accident and snake bite victims and normal delivery and caesarian section. They have visited the museum where specimens of Cyclops baby, conjoined twins, vertebral column of the foetus, ear bones, skeletons of different reptiles, bones affected due to osteoporosis, bone garden human organs such as spinal chord, brain, heart, lungs, liver, eyes, digestive system, muscular system etc. They have also witnessed fractures (accidents). They have visited forensic department, department of microbes, department of bio-chemistry, department of pediatry.

They have displayed the models related to harmful effect of tobacco, narcotics, bad food habits which lead’s to obesity and diabetes, woman’s life in society with a caption “Womb to grave” highlightening the ill effects of female foeticide and child and early maniages.

They have also seen models related to Eukaryotic cell and its organelles, and also of the various human organs.

Oxford Grammar school is organising various programmes for development of total personality of children as well academics. In connection with this aim many Scholars, Educationists, Psychologist have been invited to school to help the students to recognise and to overcome their stress, conflicts etc.,

As part of it, on 1st Nov, 2008, Dr.Barbara Wright, Doctorate in psychology, Master in counseling, Bachelor in speech pathology has been invited to address High school students and help them to overcome their stress, depression and conflicts which may hinder their total personality development. Dr.Wright is a successful clinician and therapist whose work has taken her to the US, Europe, Asia and South America. Over the past 30 years she had worked with hundreds of people in, how to be skillful in conflict resolution as well as personal development. She has been a guest on radio and television.

The focus of her presentation was on skillful compassionate communication for stress reduction and conflict resolution to reach their goal.

She interacted with the students and quenched their queries. Later she also addressed the staff of OGS. Mrs. Saileela Reddy, Headmistress of OGS, graced the occasion.

A Report on National Students Science Congress-2008

National Students’ Science Congress was held at “Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan Public, School, Jubilee Hills on 25th October, 2008. Mr.G.Prabhakar was the Co-ordinator for NSC, Hyderabad District. The Chief guest Mr.Naveen Mittal, IAS., has inaugurated the Congress. Joint Director Mrs.Mallamma spoke about the indiscipline on roads because the people are not following traffic rules properly. Shri.Gopala Krishna, Vice Chairman of the Venue school spoke about the threat to the existing life on earth. Sri.Balakasaiah, Deputy E.O. wished all the participants and encouraged the students to take part in Science Congress. He also said that more number of students should participate in such activities, which helps the students involve in activities to save the earth from destructions. 200 hundred schools participated in the Science Congress. Our Oxford Grammar School students (students of Nature Club from VIII, IX and X classes) exhibited 5 projects, entirely based on research but not on model making.
The main themes are – Noosphere, Biosphere, Hydrosphere, Atmosphere.
Sub-Themes are: Biodiversity, obesity, water pollution due to industrial waste, water contamination due to excess of fluorine in water, (Research was done in Nalgonda district by one of our students.)

Every project was based on research. They have done research collectively under the given themes. Their team was appreciative. The students have visited different families for the project on obesity. During the survey they have also faced problems with obese people. Some elderly obese people did not co-operate with students for giving reasons for their obesity. Some students have involved very seriously with commitment and enthusiasm for better life. There were discussions among students about how to save the earth and people from pollution and other ailments like obesity.

Always our students participate actively and voluntarily in Science activities.

Eco-friendly Ganesha for better environment
A Two-Day workshop on making eco-friendly Ganesha is being organized at Oxford Grammar School by Forum For A Better Hyderabad in association with Heritage and Nature club of Oxford Grammar School, St.No.11, Himayathnagar, Hyderabad as it is being done since few years in various schools of twin cities. The workshop was held on 1st and 2nd September, 2008. The participants were guided by Mr.G.Ramulu, eminent painter and sculptor and other two artisans helped this workshop.

The Oxford Heritage and Nature Club is organising workshop on the make of clay Ganesh Idols every year to create awareness about eco-friendly atmosphere and to reduce the air pollution and water pollution. Children give out a message by using natural colour which are harmless to the nature instead of artificial colours which are harmful. The Ganesh idols are decorated with natural dyes like turmeric powder, grains and seeds to prove that the luster and shine is equivalent to the artificial. 200 Ganesha idols were prepared and the same are being used by some of the student families of Oxford Grammar School.

As the school believes in “learning by making” many students are involved in the workshop. Clay, sticks, seeds and other natural materials were supplied. Children participated with great enthusiasm and made different images of Lord Ganesha. They realized using chemical colours, plaster of Paris and metals is dangerous to environment.

Headmistress, craft teachers, Ms.Usha Turaga, member of the Forum supervised the activity. The other teachers of Oxford Grammar School also guided the workshop. Idols were distributed to the parents of Oxford Grammar School on the conclusion day of the workshop i.e., 2.9.2008.

Report on Nature Club 2008-09
Oxford Grammar School with a noble cause of creating awareness among the students in the protection of preservation of nature initiated the Oxford Nature Club with 50 members and a teacher guide. Later is has become the member of WWF. During all the years the club has taken up many activities like plantation of trees in the neighbourhood, distribution of free saplings with tree guards to the residents in the lanes of the neighbourhood. The members had initiated the botanical garden in the school ground and tried to grow plants for the study of the students. The club has taken the students to Tiger Project at Srisailam. Nature strides and visit to reserve forests were regular agenda of the club. Students experienced the day and night stays at KBNR Park and Forest Academy at Dhoolapalli.

The club organized many workshops to train the children in the make of clay Ganesha idols, preparation of natural colours for holi etc., Many awareness programmes against the sound pollution by the crackers on Diwali were also organized.

The club even encouraged the students in participating many exhibitions conduced by WWF, Kids for Tiger, National Green Crops. Students also presented many skits on nature as part of “Panchabhootalu” programme by WWF with the help of craft teachers. The members developed many articles using waste, degradable materials. Every year in the month of June as a part of Vanamahotsava celebrations, the club arranges the plantation of trees in the open places and distribution of saplings to the parents. Nature camps in Hyderabad as well as Srisailam Forest etc.,

During 2008-09 Oxford Nature Club decided to take up:
1. The making of compost pits and organic manure.
2. Plantation of trees.
3. Holding workshops.
4. Conducting competitions.
5. Awareness programmes against sound pollution, artificial colours etc.,

“Care for Nature and Nature takes care of you”. Oxford Grammar School has organized a programme today to initiate the club activities with distribution of saplings. Mrs.Vani Mohan, Additional Commissioner, GHMC, Mr.M.Vedakumar, Chairman, Oxford Grammar School, Mr.W.G.Prasanna Kumar, Director, National Green Corps distributed the free saplings to the parents.

Speaking on the occasion Mrs.Vani Mohan said that GHMC has kept up target of 10 lakh plantations before December, 2008. She congratulated the students and the management for the contribution for making the city green. She appreciated the work of parents, teachers and students. She advised the students to adopt the habit of giving a plant as gift to the near and dear on any occasion. She hoped that everybody unite together to work for the betterment of the “Green environment”.

Mr.M.Vedakumar, Chairman, OGS and President, Forum for a better Hyderabad said that, Oxford Nature Club is acting as a platform for the students to develop understanding about Nature and to put efforts at their level to take care of it to enable the nature to take care of us. He also said that the Forum is extending support to the 10 lakh sapling plantation programme in twin cities under taken by GHMC. In this cause, the Forum is involving NGOs, Educational Institutions, various communities of the society to spread this programme in various circles of twin cities for a green cover all over. As a part of it, the saplings are being distributed by Oxford Nature Club to the parents and neighbours, he said.

Mr.W.G.Prasanna Kumar, speaking on the occasion gave a good comparison of teacher with nature as they both excuse. He stressed the need for developing love for the nature. He appreciated the sincerity, the dedication of members and the teachers of Oxford Nature Club which is striving hard to bring the awareness among the parents and public towards the protection and conservation of the nature. He remembered his years long association with the Oxford Nature Club and also appreciated the encouragement and help that the Oxford Grammar School management is extending for the various activities undertaking since many years.

Mr.Ramachandra Rao, Professor, Bio-technology and also a parent of Oxford Grammar School appreciated the responsibilities taken up by the Oxford Grammar School nature club and gave a call for every one to join hand in working hard for the vision 2020. Mr.Harshavardhan X class student spoke on the occasion and assumed that all the members of the club will work together to spread the message of protection of conservation.

 
 
 
Observation of Hiroshima Day

Oxford Grammar School commemorated the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki by observing the Hiroshima Day on 8th August, 2008 at its school premises. Students through a small play conveyed the adverse effects of bombings on 6th and 9th August, 1945 on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan. They discussed about the destruction caused and the suffering of the victims.
A debate was conducted for the IX class students on topic of Merits and De-merits of Atomic energy. In the debate students who favoured the use of atomic energy, argued that atomic energy is useful for life and how it can create electricity through nuclear power and its uses in medical field as a cure for many diseases like cancer and as a key to unknown aspects of science and knowledge in various fields.
The students who were against the use of atomic energy reminded how atomic energy, if mis-utilized can wipe out the human existence from the earth. They also highlighted on the concerns of the safety this atomic power from falling into the wrong hands of anti-social elements which can cause great destruction to the nature and human life.

The Vice Principal Mrs.N.Kalavathy and the Heads of the Departments of Social studies and Sciences supervised the programme. Mr.K.Prabhkar, Co-ordinator of the school was present at the meeting.

An interaction session was followed to clear the doubts of the students.
At last two minutes silence was observed in remembrance of the people of Hiroshima and Nagasaki who were killed in the atomic bomb blasts.

II. Students Visit to Prasad IMAX

Students of 9th class Neha, Juhi Agarwal, Siddharth, Harshavardhan and Shyam Babu to the 15th International Film Festival-2007 held at Hyderabad from 14th Nov 2007 to 20th Nov 2007 presented in Prasad Theatre.
They enjoyed the movies about 35 which are sponsored from many countries like Iran, China, Finland, Norway and India etc. Children took part in discussion with some great directors like Mr. Fena Zhenzhi from china, Mr. Khaja from Finland,
Mr. Ramesh Asher from India, Mr. Vinod Ganstra from India, etc.
Children gave their interview to All India Radio every day. They enjoyed those programmes very happily.

 
III. Visit to Nursery Mela
1.Students of sixth class were taken to nursery Mela on 13th August, 2007
2.They were shown the different verities of plants like floral plants, ornamental plants and different species of fruits and vegetables

Kid for Tigers  Date: 5-12-2007
Students of classes V, VI & VII were taken to attend a programme “Kids for Tigers”, the sanctuary tiger programme 2007-2008. They were shown slides. Taught the importance of saving the “Big five” of India by resource person Imran Siddiqui and Mr. Rashid .Students of Classes VII, VIII & IX classes had signature campaign to spread the awareness about the importance of saving the “Big Five” the tiger, the lion, the elephant, the leopard and the rhino. Students of classes IV, V and VI had drawn and written slogans about the same.
 
PRESS RELEASE
Traffic Commandos Training is organized for our school children in the school play ground by Traffic Police Department. The aim of the programme is to bring awareness of Traffic Rules and regulations amongst them, thereby to implement it in the nearby traffic zones in the vicinity of the school. Twenty four students are selected for Traffic Commandos duty.

The involvement of students in such a social service activity not only facilitate the children to know the traffic rules and regulations but also a common man get attracted to the involvement of children, subsequently they may follow the rules and regulations. > NAKASHI-SCROLL PAINTING WORKSHOP
Held on 11 th March, 2006

OXFORD HERITAGE CLUB organized a One Day Workshop on “ NAKASHI SCROLL PAINTING” & “TOY MAKING” for the students of twin cites on 11 th March, 2006 from 9.30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Children's World, St.No.11, Himayathnagar, Hyderabad-29 .

“Nakashi” Means a tribe is known for its new style of painting using the natural colors and earth colors to depict the stories from Indian epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata. This style of paintings was started at Chirala a small village in Warangal District. The style was practiced only by two families and still carried by them. Basically this style of painting was used to decorate the walls of their houses but gradually it spread to the walls of temples. The art includes the different styles of depicting the characters and using prominent colors. There is no mixing of colors.

Mr. Vedakumar the Director of Children's World said that, by recognizing the need of its revival Janapada, and Children's World organized the first workshop on “Nakasi Painting” 5years back at Children's World and later to make it known to the people of Twin Cities many workshops were carried out in time intervals. Now Oxford Heritage Club is organizing this workshop, he said.

Mr. Mudhusudan expert of Nakashi Painting and Mr. Mallesh expert in toys making are the resource persons and participated in today's workshop organized in the Children's World campus. 40 students from 20 schools of Twin Cities took part in the workshop.

Prof.J.Tirumala Rao, Director Oriental Manuscript library, visited the workshop and praised the organizers for their efforts in encouraging the traditional art which is on the edge of its disappearance. He congratulated the student participants for taking interest in learning the art and advised the students to carryout the glory of the art and to see that it come back to its existence.

Up to date the Junior Red Cross of the school has involved its members in various activities like health camp, workshop on first aid, blood camp and promoting health education by conducting demonstration at health museum in public gardens. Students attend frequently the periodical meetings held in different schools of twin city.

The main aim of movie club is to impart education and entertainment through visual representation. It also facilitates children to participate in Open Forums, Dramatics, Animation, and Puppetry workshops conducted in connection with international children film festivals and other occasions regularly. Children are facilitated to attend film appreciation programs fortnightly organized by children film society, Andhra Pradesh. Classical Indian and foreign films will be screened during appreciation programs. The members of Film Club are given an opportunity to watch the screening of educative films and express their views. It's a very good chance given to children from various schools to come out with their opinions regarding the subject on which they want to watch the films.
