Promotion of Clay Ganesh
Idols - A workshop
Oxford Grammar School conducted a
workshop on Promotion of clay Ganesh idols without paint on 16th
September, 2004, in the school premises on the occasion of Ganesh
Chathurthi. Keeping in view of the pollution caused by the paints
that are used in making the Ganesh Idols to look attractive and
beautiful, at the time of immersion. The samples
collected from Hussian Sagar Lake by the government of Andhra
Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board have found to
have high metal content because of the 'lead colors' used to paint
Ganesh idols which are made of Non-degradable material like steel,
is harmful to the human beings and aquatic habitat and due to which
the lake is shrunk by 40% as of now. So, they have taken
measure to create awareness among people to combat the water
pollution by making clay idols and to use the idols, which are
colored with the natural, and dyes instead of synthetic dyes like
lead chromium and lead peroxide.
As an Annual Programme under the
auspices of Oxford Nature Club we hold this workshop every year to
create and promote awareness among the students about the harm
caused by the synthetic colors and immersion of idols in the lake.
Students are encouraged and trained to exhibit the creativity in
making Ganesh Idols by using natural colors and clay, and also to
spread the awareness among the neighborhood.
